[¶1.] In spelling Greek names, I have tried to balance consistency with a desire not to baffle the reader unnecessarily. I have therefore used the familiar Latinized forms for names of authors and the best-known mythological figures (Sophocles, Aeschylus, Achilles, Helen), combined with a more consistent system of transliteration for all other Greek names (Telemachos, Kirke, etc.). The occasional compromise has also been necessary (e.g., Klytemnestra). Please note that I use k to transcribe the Greek letter kappa, but ch to transcribe the letter chi.
[¶2.] All unmarked translations from Greek and Latin are my own. In cases where a foreign-language secondary work is cited, quotations in English are also my translations. Greek texts are from the OCT editions except where noted.
[¶3.] The list of abbreviations at the front includes journals, compilations, and ancient authors most frequently cited in this book. All other abbreviations are according to the conventions established by Liddell, Scott, and Jones, eds., A Greek-English Lexicon.
